Miscarriage and Infertility: Understanding the Connection

For couples attempting to conceive, a miscarriage can be a tragic ordeal, and one that many struggle to overcome. Some couples may find it difficult to conceive again.

What is Miscarriage?

If a pregnancy continues, a “miscarriage” is the expulsion of a baby after 10 weeks of pregnancy. Most miscarriages are not diagnosed until between 10 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. The rate of miscarriage varies widely from place to place, from 6% to 25%. Very few miscarriages can be directly traced to ovulation. Some are caused by infections. Biological reasons can affect the severity and type of miscarriage.

What is Infertility?

Infertility is defined as “failure to become pregnant after trying to become pregnant for a certain period of time.” The definition of infertility may include several reasons for the problem. Common methods used to help couples conceive include: Fertility Medications, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF), Sperm Banking and Surrogacy. To determine what the problem is, doctors usually look for physical signs of fertility issues.

The Endometrial Reaction: When the lining of the uterus is damaged and unable to support pregnancy.

The Endometrial Evaluation: A procedure that looks for scar tissue and damaged or irregular lining of the uterus.
